There he could enjoy the breeze and watch the people go by, but would not get away. A good solution for a large and gentle dog. Apartments are small for the most part in the village, and it can be hard on large dogs. And backyards are few, so here he was. And he became a mascot in my mind.
So on my last visit in June, I was sitting in Le Pain Quotidien on Hudson and I saw him! I leapt out of my seat and ran out to get a picture for my own sake. He's got to be seen to be appreciated.
And a second snap of him in all his largeness (pls. Click on the pic to enlarge). He's just about the size of those bicycles behind him, but this angle doesn't do his stature justice.
It was cool this day, but I remember seeing him on sweltering days and thought, "How does he handle the heat with all that hair?"
I have no idea as to his breed and have been looking on the internet to no avail. It's probably just easier to ask you -- do you know what he is?

HI BB -- glad you stopped by!
s.lei and TERI seems you are good guessers, as proven by the links Margo provided. Thanks to all.
I've never heard of a Kuvasz! Hey, we all learn something on this blog, lol!
From looking at Margo's links, the pix of Kuvasz face looks more like this guy, but the body on the Pyrenees looks more like this guy? I have no idea there would be two dogs that looked so similar! If any of you check out both of Margo's links, tell me what you think.
Pyrenees rings a bell, as at the time I asked what the breed was and it of course went right out of my head the moment she said it, even though I repeated it.
Sweet Mango, I definitely was in with you on the description when I wrote this post!
i grew up with Samoyed's... But he lOOks different to me? X:-/
I'm going with BWD, too, although my second guess is a Pyrenees. I just love that you saw him again and got pictures for your memory and for us!
I had one that looked just like this one years ago when living in Akron, Ohio. All white and so beautiful. Her mother was all black and her father is up for debate.
Her mother was a Shepherd (Lady) and we named the white one (Tish) when a baby. They both were so well behaved and so friendly. I often wondered who the papa dog was and what he was. Hmmmmm?
